At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
